Office for Psychiatry Department Computers

Our department is licensed to install Office on any department-owned computer.  We refer to this as the “Shared” license, since the license is tied to that particular computer and any user who logs into that computer can use the Office suite.

Office for Personally Owned Computers

UW has a license that permits most paid employees to install Microsoft Office on personally-owned computers. We refer to this as the “Named” user license, since the license is tied to an individual user’s UW account.  To install Office on a personal computer, please click the following link and sign in with your @wisc.edu email address.

This will take you to an Office365 home page where there is a button to “Install Office.”  If the button does not exist, then you are not granted a license to install on a personal computer.

Office on the Web Access

Most paid and unpaid UW appointments are eligible to use Office on the Web (also called Microsoft 365).  Users can access Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. from a web browser by signing in at https://www.office.com.

 

Change License Version on Psychiatry-Managed Computer

Follow these steps on your Psychiatry department-managed Windows computer to convert a Named license to a Shared license.  This is necessary if you are unable to sign into Office with your UW NetID to activate it.

  1. Open the Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub app (more details)
  2. Search for the O365 ProPlusRetail (Named) app then click Uninstall
  3.  Once you see the button say Install, the uninstall process should be complete
  4. Now search for Office ProPlus2021 (shared) then click Install
  5. You should see a notification popup from VMware Intelligent Hub confirming the install
  6. You should again see a popup confirming when the install is complete.  If you launch a product like Word, then navigate to Account, you should see under Product Information that the product is activated as Microsoft Office LTSC Professional Plus 2021.
  7. If it says the product is not activated, connect your device to our SMPH VPN.  Once connected to our network, the product should activate automatically.

Troubleshooting

If the Uninstall or Install buttons do not appear to be doing anything, try initiating a sync.  Click your name in the bottom-left corner of Intelligent Hub then click the Sync Device button.  This will force the program to reevaluate pending actions and usually gets the installs moving quickly.
