Permitted Software

A Significant Change in Procedure

All computers managed by SMPH Informatics and Information Technology (IIT) at the department level are part of a HIPAA-compliant network, which means all software, including research tools, must be subject to a cybersecurity evaluation and approved before installation. This means the previous practice of impromptu, in-person, on-site evaluation of software for approval is no longer procedure.

The fastest method to submit your own request for an evaluation of a software title is to visit the the new portal:

SMPH Cybersecurity Portal

There, you should click Submit a Standard Request then select Risk Assessment. The form allows you specify the kind of data that will be used with your desired software, how/if sharing will be done, and any other details you’d like to add to emphasize how important the software is for your research. The time it takes to fulfill a request varies.

For further questions, please see the brief FAQ portion at the top of the portal page.

In your submission, feel free to add or mention the support@psychiatry.wisc.edu email so that Cybersecurity can keep us at the Help Desk appraised of any potentially approved software.
